The M1928 automatic submachine gun, designed by John Taliaferro Thompson in 1918, was adopted in 1938 by the United States Armed Forces, serving during World War II and later in the Korean War, as well as in the early stages of the Vietnam War. It was a favorite of soldiers, criminals, police, and civilians for its ergonomics, compact size, reliability, high rate of fire in automatic mode, and its .45 ACP ammunition. It had a straight magazine holding 20 rounds or a drum magazine holding 50–100 rounds.

It acquired a bad reputation during the Prohibition era (1920–1933) in the United States. It appeared regularly in the media of the time, when it was the weapon of choice for gangsters. It earned nicknames like the "Trench Broom," the "Trench Sweeper," the "Chicago Typewriter," the "Chicago Piano," the "Chicago Style," and "The Chopper."

It has since gained popularity among collectors for its historical significance.
